Evidence 1: EDT 672 Online Learning Blueprint

Rationale 1: This evidence takes an in-depth look at learning online. It looks at the positive as well as negative aspects of 21st century learning. While investigating the pros and cons, it became very clear that some students can truly benefit from online learning, while other students need the structure and interaction that a classroom environment provides. There are many different aspects that need to be looked into when determining what is appropriate and beneficial to each individual student. With the advancing in interactive technology, there are many valuable resources to educators. The key is to determine which resources best meet the needs of your students and allow them to show their true potential. I developed a blueprint for an online course to help challenge my 4th grade math students who were performing at and above the 4th grade level. The course involved online discussions on problem solving as well as websites that allowed the students to be more challenged in the area of math. This allows these students to be challenged to their full potential.

This evidence was very important to me because it allowed me to really look at online learning to see not only how it can benefit students, but it also made me realize that it is not ideal for all students. The blueprint that I developed was very beneficial to me because I really was looking for a way to challenge some of my math students. Having 27 students in my class, it is often difficult to find the time to help those students who need more assistance while at the same time challenge those who are ready to learn more. This blueprint is an example of resources I now use in my classroom to challenge the students who need it, not only in math, but other subjects as well.

The students in my class have really benefitted from using these resources. I feel like I am better able to meet the needs of all the students in my class by having developed my online class blueprint. I have also been able to use these resources for students who are struggling in certain areas to help practice specific skills to become more proficient.

KSD
2.K.1 The teacher understands how learning occurs -- how students construct knowledge, acquire skills, and develop habits of mind – and how to use instructional strategies that promote student learning for a wide range of student abilities.

By developing an online class I was able to explore many technology resources that will meet the wide range of academic needs of my students. I feel that by using technology, I am also better preparing my students for the future while incorporating academic skills and challenges. Students also learn to self-direct their learning by exploring areas that are of interest to them through different technology resources.

2.S.1 The teacher assesses individual and group performance in order to design instruction that meets learners’ current needs in each domain (cognitive, social, emotional, moral, and physical) and that leads to the next level of development.

Based on student assessments in class, I am able to choose technology resources online to either help each student better their academic skills or challenge them more. Certain students are given more independence to further their studies, while other students are giving the emotional support by having more practice to boost their confidence. This is a definite advantage of learning online.

2.D.1 The teacher appreciates individual variation at each developmental level and shows respect for the diverse talents of all learners, and is committed to help them develop self-confidence and competence.

After developing these online resources for my students, it is evident which ones really thrive with online learning. Some students appreciate the challenge, while others prefer the environment of classroom learning. Each student is able to work at a level that they are comfortable with while always having the option to be more challenged.
